The Future of Search Engine Optimisation
Until recently the Search Engines several different databases that you could search in to find information.
Obviously the most used database was the TEXT based one we are familiar with, e.g.

Google had several other databases that you could search under, e.g. Maps, Videos etc.
However Google are just introducing Universal Search, which pulls together all of these databases and performs a single search across them.
The Search results will therefore not only show text based web page results but may include images or videos. It will also look in Maps, Base, News, Books etc
Consequentially, if you have relevant images and/or videos on your site, you have more opportunities to have results for your site rank higher IF the Search Engine knows about them.
If you don’t optimise your images, videos, maps etc. the chances are they will not rank well in either image or video searches or in the New Universal Search
You can gain a jump on your competition.
Optimised images and videos are still rare on the web. The competition for rankings for many well searched terms is weak or sparse. By making the effort to optimise your media, you have an opportunity to gain an edge on your competition.
